Neurotypical? Not for a moment...
Once upon a time, deep in the forest by the Ganges river, an unassuming but poisonous snake was the first animal to have his morning drink from the flowing waters of that holy river. He never meant harm to anyone but he was what he was and, when he drank from the river, the water became tainted by the poison in his fangs. None of the other animals could drink that water, but waited patiently for the morning miracle that happened every day: a beautiful green unicorn walked to the river's bank and dipped his horn, the alicorn, into the water. The alicorn's magic purified the river, turning the poison into something like CoQ10 or whatever, delighting the animals with its fragrance and flavor, enabling them to drink to as much as they wanted, making them strong and healthy.
My name's Jay Halpern and I do something like that with the families I serve. No, there's nothing magical about what I offer: after more than three decades of service to kids and adults with MR, autism, problem behaviors, and other distinctions that have enabled THEM to challenge and brighten MY life, my gurus have taught me a great deal. What I've learned I will share with you.
My mission statement: I will use whatever temporary abilities I have to help those whose abilities are more compromised than mine, as I would hope others would help me as age diminishes my physical and mental strengths. Pretty simple, no? I will enter a person's circle of family and friends, dip the alicorn, and then be gone. Can I help a kid get a better deal from a school? Yes. Can I help families plan for respite? Of course. If a child or adult needs positive behavioral supports to help him or her live more joyously among family and friends, I can help develop them. And, based on a person's choices and capacities, I can help move him or her through the many hurdles of life beyond school, into work, into comfortable social circles, into self-fulfillment.
A bit more about the unicorn: all the forest creatures helped him find food, sang songs with him, comforted him in his loneliness, shared their bounty with him whenever it was needed. No, I don't work for free. I have done so, often, in the past, but no more. No third party payments. No plastic ;-)}}. Just money. Barter? Of course! I'm a card-carrying member of the counter-culture and open to any kind of creative systems change. The folks I help deserve better than waiting-lists, uncertainty, isolation and separation, and my commitment to that end means I must be user-friendly and accessible. That I am.
I'm also: a writer/poet (independent.academia.edu/JayHalpern); a philosophy devotee; an irascible tree-hugger and animal rights activist; a worshiper of creativity and the arts (note my motorcycle and helmet); a teacher of creative thinking and logic. My complete CV is available upon request.
